Castello di Reschio

Luxury 11th Century Castle Hotel in the Umbrian Countryside
Reschio is an age-old 3,700-acre pastoral estate in the Umbrian hills on Italy's Umbria-Tuscany border. Encircling an ancient 10th-century castle, the estate was bought in 1994 by Count Antonio Bolza, intent on bringing this forgotten corner of Italy back to life. In the 25 years since, Count Bolza's son, London-trained architect Count Benedikt, and his wife, Donna Nencia, have set about beautifully restoring over half of the ruined farmhouse buildings on the estate, transforming them one by one into one-of-a-kind private homes.

Architecture & Construction
Architect and owner Conte Benedikt Bolza wanted to keep the atmosphere of a family house, combining old pieces from previous generations with new and contemporary designs. This perfect symbiosis of old and new make it impossible to pigeonhole the castle into any design era.
Environmental Management
The ethos of the Bolza family has always been to protect and preserve the property for future generations, and no decision is made until the impact on the natural world has been considered.
Community & Ecosystem impact
The bespoke designs made for the Hotel Castello di Reschio through B.B. for Reschio were made by local artisans, employed on the Reschio Estate for many years, often for several generations.
Giving Back
They employ from local communities as much as possible, offering training in both terms of hospitality and English.
Food
The menu is curated to represent traditional Italian cuisine using local and seasonal produce, which comes straight from our kitchen gardens.
Guest Experience
Many activities highlight the engagement with Reschio's wilderness, such as wildlife watching walks, wild hacks across the meadows, mountain biking into the forests, joining the beekeeper to understand the honey production, wine tasting tours of vineyards, etc.
Marketing
Both physical marketing materials and digital ones entice them to a more sustainable and slow approach to their stay.
An extraordinary corner of unspoilt Umbria.
Surrounded by olive trees and oaks as far as the eye can see, in an extension of 1500 hectares, lies the property that began as the secret refuge of the Bolza family, in the Umbrian mountains.
Discovered by his father, Count António Bolza, and brought to live by his son Benedikt, the country retreat gave rise in 2020 to a hotel with 36 rooms, all inside an ancient castle, and eight houses for rent. The Hotel Castello di Reschio brings together the opulence of history to the simplicity of nature.
The reforestation carried out by the family allowed the preservation of several autochthonous species, agriculture became entirely organic, several beehives were built and foraging visits began to be organised around the estate, led by Benedikt's wife, Nencia.
The decor combines personal family items with furniture designed by Benedikt and produced by local artisans. Many of the materials were reused in the reconstruction process.
The two restaurants, Al Castello and Alle Scuderie, favor Italian cuisine, seasonality and, above all, what exists in the garden (in addition to fruit and vegetables, the property produces olive oil, wine, honey, gin and amaro liqueur). It is from the vegetable garden and gardens that the products used in the SPA treatments are harvested, of which the signature one stands out, which uses the homestead's honey and chamomile.
Sustainability is the basis of everything, from food to service: wheat is harvested and then processed through a water mill, to turn into flour that is used in the kitchen; the hay that grows in the fields is used to condition the stables; compost is made (even the bedroom slippers); local workers are hired and, whenever possible, adequate training is given to the high standard that is intended to be maintained.
The stable houses 40 dressage-trained Spanish horses that can be ridden by everyone, children included. In addition to this activity, the hotel also offers cooking classes, tennis lessons, guided bicycle tours, truffle hunting and wildlife observation, among others.
