An Alentejo love affair
With an unmistakable trace of the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, the hotel includes 40 accommodation units, 22 rooms, 16 houses and two suites. The swimming pool area is one of the most beautiful: walled by an aqueduct; it guards a long pool from which a barrocal emerges at one end, and a pool for the youngest right at the entrance. On the other side of the wall, further back, are the vegetable garden and orchard, where the ingredients that appear on the menus of the restaurants São Lourenço do Barrocal and Hortelão are grown.
Framed by a cabinet of curiosities signed by Joana Astolfi, in which the designer uses family pieces and other memorabilia (taxidermy stands out as well as an appetising pickled partridge recipe), the São Lourenço do Barrocal restaurant serves what region, and especially the vegetable garden, gives him. The Hortelão, located by the pool, is open between mid-spring and late autumn, while warm weather allows for outdoor dining.
The SPA, with its monastic, simple and uncluttered appearance, bears the signature of the prestigious organic cosmetics brand Susanne Kaufmann. The well-known Austrian brand developed treatments in partnership with the hotel, such as the use of heated barrocals, olive oil produced on the estate or rosemary that grows wild in the fields (especially along the walls of the shop and rooms).
Respecting the agricultural heritage, the estate produces wine — with advice from the oenologist Susana Esteban —, honey, olive oil, teas, jams, cattle, assorted fruits and vegetables. Next to the restaurant, there are several horses and a donkey, with which you can explore the estate at a gallop or on a buggy ride. There are several outdoor activities that can be done, such as bike rides, hiking along the trails, archaeological visits (the second largest menhir of the Iberian Peninsula is located in the Barrocal), bird watching, ethno-botanical tours, stargazing, among others. many other suggestions.
